Ontario: Winter Conditions Add To Commercial Truck Accident Concerns

Ontario: Winter Conditions Add To
Commercial Truck Accident Concerns

The Ontario Provincial Police is concerned about the number of commercial truck related accidents this winter. They have responded to more than 1,200 commercial motor vehicle collisions since November 1.

Between Nov. 1 and Dec. 17 the OPP responded to 1,295 collisions that involved commercial trucks with more than 220 of these incidents having occurred over the past 10 days alone. In one recent incident, the driver of the tractor trailer drove into a bridge support, resulting in the jackknifed truck, leaking approximately 15,000 litters of diesel fuel into a creek.

The OPP continues to see large trucks lose control and roll over when the drivers ignore posted ramp speed advisories signs, and they fail to slow down, when travelling on highway on and off ramps.

"The OPP acknowledges that many commercial motor vehicle drivers take their driving responsibilities seriously, but it is imperative that every person, who drives a large truck, recognises the increased risks and social costs. The risk of death and serious injuries is greater, and the property damage and disruption to the movement of traffic are more extensive, when large load bearing vehicles are involved in collisions,"

Nine of the commercial truck road crashes, since Nov 1, resulted in the loss of life. Since the beginning of 2014, the OPP has responded to more than 8,850 collisions that involved a truck, with 74 resulting in deaths.

The OPP is reminding drivers to:

-Adjust your speed and slow right down when visibility and road conditions deteriorate and avoid non essential travel during these periods.

-Activate your full set of headlights every day throughout the winter months, since using the full set of headlights is the only way to completely engage your rear lights and this is critical in helping to reduce the risk of collisions when driving in poor visibility.

About Smart Lite

60% of all truck accidents are directly contributed to the front end blind spot of commercial trucks. In North America alone over 5,000 deaths and 140,000 injuries occur annually. At Smart Lite we believe that those statistics are far too high.

What is Smart Lite? Smart Lite is designed to reduce crashes, to save lives and to reduce injuries. The system was designed by Marty Vanderhoek, a professional commercial truck driver with over 20 years experience in the industry. It is a simple, yet unique design that utilises simple mirror to mirror technology to completely expose the entire front end area of the truck to the driver from inside the cab. As a result. the device offers the driver a clear and unrestricted view of any vehicle, motorcycle, cyclist or pedestrian that could be in the front or blind spots or no zone area of the truck.

No high tech cameras, mirrors or unreliable beeper systems. With Smart Lite the driver instantly sees whatever is in the front and blind spot areas of the truck by a split second glance into the West Coast mirror. About Marty Vanderhoek : Inventor of the Smart Lite

Marty Vanderhoek is a life long trucker from Langley, B.C., Canada whose been at the wheel since 1975, from fish to fruit he’s pulled it all.

His 35 years experience behind the wheel has taught him the many dangers that truckers face on a daily basis. One area is that front end blind spot that plagues every truck driver. How on earth can you see that car or motorcycle that is running beside you and a little ahead of your door?. Essentially, you can't! Until Now....

Drawing upon his 35 years experience behind the wheel Marty invented the Smart Lite; A simple system which he says is “A breakthrough in commercial trucking that will save lives” According to Marty "The Smart Lite device is revolutionary in that it allows the operator to see what is occupying the space in that front end blind spot. Before Smart Lite there was no device or system that allowed the operator to make a 100% visual determination of what was beside him and a little ahead of his door. With Smart Lite that problem is now solved."

Indeed, this simple yet revolutionary safety device is already being hailed by commercial truckers for its simplicity and effectiveness. The device has already received an endorsement by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) as a safety feature that greatly improves trucker safety.

Marty Vanderhoek: Talks About Smart Lite: A Commercial Trucking Safety Device That Will Reduce Injuries And Save Lives

Smart Lite: A Breakthrough In Commercial Trucking That Will Save Lives

"Invented By A Trucker For Truckers"

Marty Vanderhoek the inventor of the Smart Lite
talks about his unique invention that will save lives!

Back on August 17, 2014 the Vancouver Province Newspaper  wrote an article titled  Where Are You? I Can't See That You Are There . In that article the writer focused on the "front end blind spot" - a "dead zone" if you like - where pedestrians, cyclists and small vehicles seem to "disappear" from sight from the operator of a large 18 wheeler.

It is a zone where death and injuries are just waiting to happen!

Marty Vanderhoek is a professional truck driver with over 30 years experience driving the big rigs. His experience and knowledge led him to invent a simple, yet unique device called Smart Lite; A  Breakthrough In Commercial Trucking That Will Save Lives.

This simple, yet unique device now allows commercial truck drives to see what they could not see before - what if anything is in that "front end blind spot".

As Marty states in the following video "When people see a large commercial truck with all the mirrors and cameras they assume that the operator can see everything that is around him, well, this is just not true"

That is until now - With Smart Lite.

Watch and Listen to Marty's Story.

Commercial Trucking Safety: Transport Minister Impressed By Smart Lite Design

Transport Minister Impressed By Smart Lite Design

Back in the year 2005 Marty Vancerhoek, the inventor of the Smart Lite, had a prototype of his design reviewed by [at the time], British Columbia Transport Minister Kevin Falcon. Mr. Falcon was impressed with the design, and as such, wrote a letter to Mr Vanderhoek stating he was "very impressed" with the product.

The letter appears below for the readers review and consideration.

Commercial Truck Insurance: What Are The Choices?

Commercial Truck Insurance: What Are The Choices?

U.S.A. Commercial Trucking

For many people becoming a professional commercial truck driver is a dream come true.  Whether we are talking about a 18 wheeler going down Interstate 66 or a smaller commercial vehicle entering the city limits to drop off or pick up the next load; sitting behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle is what they were meant to do.

Yet, with this dream comes the reality of certain costs associated with getting your truck on the road; commercial truck insurance is just one of those costs.

It's true. No one likes to pay for insurance but as a commercial trucker it is something that you need to do . Yes, the chances are very slim that you will never need to make an insurance claim, but the fact of the matter is that it is much better to have the insurance and need it than to need it and not have it.

When it comes to your commercial trucking insurance needs you have two choices when it comes to selecting a policy; collision coverage or comprehensive coverage

The Coverage Choices

Collision coverage

When it comes to your commercial truck there are basically two types of coverage. There is collision coverage and comprehensive insurance. Collision insurance will only pay to have the vehicle that you hit, if the accident is your fault repaired. With Collision insurance you will not have any repairs to your commercials truck, so if the accident is your fault you will be out of a truck unless you personally have the funds to repair it.

Comprehensive coverage

Then there is comprehensive coverage. This type of vehicle coverage is going to be more costly because if you are involved in an accident it will cover your repair costs as well as the repair cost of the other vehicle, if it your fault. Having this type of coverage will cost you more but if you have a newer truck or you do not have a lot of money in savings this is the way to go because it will ensure that you are able to get back on the road as the commercial truck company insurance company will pay for repairs up to a specific dollar amount.
